The Heart of Scientific Evidence: How to Write a "Methodology" Section?

The methods section is the “recipe” for your research. Just as if you leave out the ingredients and cooking steps in a recipe and someone else cannot cook that dish, an article missing the method section is scientifically invalid.

The most basic rule of science is this:“If another researcher does the same experiment using your recipe (method), they should find the same results.”If your method is vague, your work will be "personal opinion" rather than "scientific".

2. Architecture of the Method Section: 5W1H Rule

Eksiksiz bir yöntem bölümü şu sorulara cevap vermelidir:

graph TD A["Ne?
Araştırma Modeli"] --> B["Kim/Ne ile?
Evren ve Örneklem / Veri Seti"] B --> C["Nasıl?
Veri Toplama Araçları"] C --> D["Hangi İşlem?
Veri Analizi"] D --> E["Nerede/Ne Zaman?
Sınırlılıklar"] style C fill:#e1f5fe,stroke:#01579b,stroke-width:2px
Figure 1: 5 Key Components of the Method Section

Çalışmanızın deseni nedir? (Nicel, Nitel, Karma? Tarama modeli mi, Deneysel mi?) Example: "Bu araştırmada, nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır."

Veriyi kimden topladınız? (İnsanlar, şirketler, ülkeler?)
 • Universe:The entire target audience (e.g. all university students in Türkiye).
 • Sample:The small group you reach (Ex: 500 students in Istanbul).
 • Sampling Method:How did you choose them? (Random or easy?)

Veriyi hangi aletle topladınız? (Anket, Ölçek, Mülakat Formu, TCMB Veri Tabanı?) Criticism: Kullandığınız ölçeğin "Geçerlilik ve Güvenilirlik" bilgilerini mutlaka verin. (Cronbach Alpha katsayısı vb.)

Topladığınız ham veriyi nasıl işlediniz? (SPSS, STATA, EViews? Hangi testler? T-testi, Regresyon, ANOVA?)

3. Quantitative vs. Qualitative Method Writing

Feature Quantitative (Numerical) Qualitative (Verbal)
Focus Numbers, statistics, generalization. Words, meanings, in-depth analysis.
sample Large (n > 300). Power of representation is important. Small (n = 10-20). Richness of information is important.
Analysis Statistical tests (SPSS etc.). Content analysis, descriptive analysis (MAXQDA etc.).

4. Mistakes Made While Writing a Method

 • Not Using Past Tense:The method section describes a finished work that has been done. It should be said "It has been done", not "It will be done".
 • Drowning in Details:Do not give unnecessary details such as "I opened the SPSS program, clicked on the analysis menu..." "Data were analyzed in SPSS 26.0 program" is sufficient.
 • Not Giving References:Give attribution to the owner of the scale or method of analysis you used.

Critical Warning: Ethics Committee Permission

Eğer çalışmanızda insanlardan veri topluyorsanız (anket, mülakat, deney), mutlaka üniversitenizin Permission certificate from the Ethics Committee almanız ve bu belgenin tarih/sayı numarasını Yöntem bölümünde belirtmeniz zorunludur. Aksi takdirde makaleniz (ne kadar iyi olursa olsun) yayınlanmaz.
